This is a passage that you want to be careful with, because it would be too easy to dismiss other passages and implicitly “excuse” sin in a person because the passage says that no one can cleanse himself and say he is pure from sin. That was true under the Old Covenant, and the first part is still true under the New, but under the New Covenant, being pure from sin is a very real thing.
Otherwise the statement that those who confess their sins are cleansed of all unrighteousness would have no meaning.
