Is “cheering up” someone a good idea? One of the proverbs compares excessive cheerfulness around a somber person to stealing someone’s coat or mixing vinegar and baking soda. So maybe, being overly happy around a sad person may not be the best form of encouragement you can offer. Listen for the solution.

Hey guys,

As for the lesson, there is a time and a place for everything. I know that if I am sad, that I am usually not in the mood for happy songs/movies/jokes, etc. Hearing/watching them only make it worse, because it makes me realize that I cannot enjoy them, and one feeds the other, compounding the situation.
And I know that it is better to be there for someone who may be grieving, maybe not saying a word but lending an ear, letting them talk, if they wish. It can be enough for them to know that you are there. Maybe not to give anything, but to help take away. I am very empathic, so I could understand (to a certain degree) what they are feeling, so I try to go with their feelings.
