What does furry mean to you? We’ve tackled this question before, long ago, but this week we have a new group with new experiences and inputs. We talk about the difference between a hobby and a lifestyle, and even ponder where the two overlap, and we each reach our own conclusions.
So how about you? What is furry to you? Tell us in the comments below!

furry is a bit more of a hobby but less than a lifestyle for me. i’m not obsessed with it…compared to my outright car obsession. XP i want a partial suit, but i’m in FLORIDA, which means that there’s way too much heat and humidity to wear much more than a long-sleeved shirt and jeans, even in winter. in ten years or so, if i got cash and in a more northern state, i’d probably get one. furry is all over my drawings, but hey, that in itself is just a hobby.
there aren’t many furries down here. if people know me online and in real life, they know and usually call me by my real name, but i keep my online friends ‘in the dark’ about my real name. i chose my online name to have a name that i actually like, with more meaning to myself. just about everyone in real life knows i’m a furry through my drawings (and, thankfully, accept it and generally have a sense of humor about it). in my old school, where it was a semi-professional setup, i didn’t throw furry around, so i don’t usually bring it up to people i only talk to professionally or will not know talk with for very long, unless we come to a topic that is somewhat relevant to it.
and on the Denny’s topic, my church is on the same street as a smoke shop/hookah lounge, but the Denny’s is only near an adult daycare…welcome to South Florida.
I understand the heat and humidity. In South Carolina, I can comfortably wear a suit from late October (maybe) through February or sometimes March. As long as it is below 60 I can put up with it, but I don’t really enjoy it until the temperature is below 50. Nevertheless, I know some who will suit in the middle of summer.
it’s almost always 70+ degrees up here. 80-90 about half that time, and even sometimes over 100 during summer. yeah. 50s and lower is a rarity i cherish. XP
For me it’s about the same…more than a hobby but less than a lifestyle. I don’t own a fursuit, but would like to get one one day. But it is a part of me, it has helped mw yo grow, to be more open-minded about others. It’s also helped me to have a huge fur family that I keep in contact with on a daily basis.
The site forgot about you, and I had to approve your comment this time!
What does it mean to be more than a hobby but less than a lifestyle, to you? What is that middle ground like?
