I’ve mostly ran into the hug box on Facebook when it comes to politics. (I’ve also seen it around groups with politics.) Facebook seems to be the main offender, at least with my circles. I think the reason is the people there are friends with relatives who mostly believe the same as they do. The one person posts a link to an article then everyone else leaps in with support, until I stick my nose into it. I’ve noticed that even if the main poster is polite to you (they normally know me in person) their friends will often be very rude and they don’t seem to mind the rudeness of the friends who are being their attack dogs.
I think the way to try to break free of this is to always show respect, and if you are in a situation where you can delete comments, delete the disrespectful comments and then warn the person you won’t tolerate disrespect, even if they were backing you up.
