So Path is a board gamer? Awesome! Path, do you use BoardGameGeek? 🙂
Regarding this topic, I’m afraid I didn’t budget any money for giving people gifts. I’ll be giving my mother an IOU for a lunch date where we can spend time together and work on her brain, which I suppose is nice. I’m also giving my church’s preacher a copy of one of my favorite card tricks for Christmas, because he enjoys my card tricks sometimes. So yeah. 🙂
I use board game geek pretty extensively, even when shopping at a quality game store. Those guys are good.
You can see most of my current game collection here:

Recently added Race for the Galaxy, Caverna, Terra Mystica, and The Castles of Burgundy. If it wasn’t for Christmas, I’d barely have anything I own :p
I like Amazon gift cards. With more “specialty” gift cards, such as ones to stores not everyone uses, I’d suggest only getting those if you know the person. (Like getting a coffee dragon a gift card to a coffee shop is good. Getting me a gift card to a coffee shop would lead to me trying to sell the thing, or giving it away.)
One “do not” for me is coffee mugs. Around here, they seem to be the default gift for anyone who doesn’t know what to give. The problem is, I only need one, maybe two mugs. Pretty soon, there are tons of mugs around that are unused. (For people who drink coffee or tea, they’re probably a nice gift.)
Cash is something I save like crazy, so I do have trouble with thank-you cards.
I like socks, if people get good quality ones.
When I was four, I got a puppy for Christmas. I don’t think my parents were very happy about that. (The neighbor gave it to us.) I had that dog for about fifteen years. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a Christmas pet, such as if the parents surprise their child with a puppy. (I have heard horror stories where the child was allergic to dogs though.) Just make sure it’s actually something the receiver wants.
Since I have a very small artistic ability, I try to draw my friends things. Even if you’re not that good of an artist, people do appreciate art of their characters.
Oh good, so my idea of a puppy wrapped in coffee mugs is still a go!
My favorite gifts these year were the pretty custom furry postcards people had made. I LOVE those.
That application was denied by the Coyote Council
I’ve always had trouble giving gifts. Probably because I always have disliked giving gift cards, and that seems to be the prime gift for my family.
Regarding board games, I always seem to get some sort of board that I already have, or don’t want to waste
my time playing. I understand how that feels, Path.
My ideal gift is usually something more meaningful than money. While I don’t have much artistic talent, a friend of mine who doesn’t have a budget for presents will often give paintings/prints as gifts, and it seems to have been working well.
Right, and with board games it’s extra tricky becuase
1) There’s a huge gulf between the games you see at target and the actual good games we don’t have a great market for over here (monopoly vs, Mice and Mystics)
2) There’s so many board games, and they’re so expensive that you wanna aim true
3) It’s hard to keep track of inventory
